Agate is a name given to a variety of banded chalcedony, a mineral of the quartz group. It is predominantly white, with layers of creamy browns, blacks and grays. Some may include layers of yellow ochre, gold, scarlet and red. Agate is sometimes called the earth rainbow because, in its various forms, the concentric bands in nature form nearly every color the earth can produce, including a colorless form.
Dendritic Agate is a non banded mineral which means it is not strictly an Agate in scientific terms though it is still included in the Agate family. Its name is derived from a Greek word meaning “tree-like” which refers to the patterns created by dark inclusions of iron or manganese called dendrites.
Agates in general have been used throughout history for medicinal uses in ancient Greek and Egyptian civilizations which later spread throughout Africa and the Middle East into Russia. Objects found from the Neolithic period were made from Agate.
