Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with a hexagonal crystal system. It can be found all over the world but is most commonly found in Brazil, Morocco, England and the USA. It has a shiny dark color with a metallic sheen caused by iron inclusions in the genetic makeup of the crystal. The name Hematite is derived from the Greek word ‘haimatites’ meaning blood. This is because when Hematite is found naturally the iron content causes it to rust giving it a deep red, blood-like color.
Archeology studies suggest that Hematite has been used for over 164,000 years, first being used by prehistoric humans during the Stone Age as chalk to adorn cave walls in what is now South Africa. It has also been found in graveyards from 80,000 years ago though it is not exactly known what their purpose was. Used by Ancient Egyptians to stop a wound from bleeding, it was also included as amulets in their tombs. It was referred to as the blood stone in the Middle Ages for the red tinge left behind in water after it was washed and polished as if the stone itself had bled.

The most popular source of Sodalite comes from the Princess Sodalite mine in Canada named after Princess Margaret of England who, while during a royal visit to Buffalo New York, was gifted a piece of the stone. The princess immediately fell in love with it, inspiring her to then order 130 tons of Sodalite to be shipped to her residence in London which she then completely decorated with the stone. This bit of history is also what grants Sodalite the nickname “Princess Blue”.
