 Geological History

Carnelian is an orange-colored variety of chalcedony, a mineral in the quartz family. Various shades of this precious gemstone can range from orange, yellow, brown, red or even pink, though the very best Carnelian is found in India that has the ability to transform from a shade of brown to red when placed in the sun.

It has been used for over 4500 years in jewelry making by both the Sumerians and Egyptians. In ancient Egypt Carnelian was worn by master architects to show their ranks. While in Egypt, Napoleon Bonaparte found a single piece of Carnelian on the battleground and from then on wore it every day, leaving it to his nephew when he died.  It was the first stone in the breast plate of the High Priest and was said to signify the blood of martyrs and to ward off the plague.

Metaphysical & Spiritual History

In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was referred to as the “setting sun” because of its captivating color and its ability to shine like the sunset. Carnelian rings were worn by Egyptians to eliminate bad tempers or feelings of jealousy and hatred. It was also used by ancient Egyptians to protect the dead during their journey to the afterlife. In Renaissance magic, pieces of Carnelian were engraved with either a picture of a warrior or a sword and placed in the home as it was believed that doing so would bring protection against harsh storms. Some ancient warriors would wear Carnelian amulets into battle to bring courage and physical strength. It is recorded that this was a stone of royalty, and many noblemen were buried with carnelian.

This stone supports and works with the first three chakras, aiding in the increase of physical energy, personal power, and creativity. It is a stone often recommended for fertility issues as it activates the sacral chakra, and is said to be a grounding stone.

Carnelian brings an influx of life force, sexual and creative energies, and assertive will.  It is of great help to the gentle souls who wish for good things but have difficulty making them happen. Carnelian is a powerful ally to call upon when one needs to take major action. It activates the first, second and third Chakras, perfect for lending courage to go ahead and dedicate oneself to a new path. With the Root (1st), you are supported and feel confident; the Sacral (2nd) taps into your creativity, your powers of manifestation and ingenuity; your Solar Plexus (3rd) is that leadership and willpower, your very own personal Fire that helps you get things done and put things into motion. It helps procrastinators decide on a course of action.

Carnelian protects against envy, fear, and rage, and helps to banish sorrow from the emotional structure.  It provides energy conducive to the stabilization of energy in the home.

  • In ancient times, Carnelian was believed to give the wearer courage in battle and to help timid speakers become both eloquent and bold. Today it is seen as a stone that supports qualities of leadership and courage.
