Latin Name: Pogostemon Cablin

Patchouli is a member of the mint family, and gets its name from the Tamil word, paccilai, which translates to “green leaf”. You may sometimes see it referred to as “pucha-pat” in older references.  It has many versatile uses throughout history and was even said to be the chosen scent by Queen Victoria who would keep a bit of the herb in her linen boxes. During the 18th century, Chinese silk traders used Patchouli to repel moths. Patchouli has been used in its native Malaysia as a medical treatment and would be placed in open wounds to prevent infection. An extremely popular scent in the 1960s and 70s, Patchouli is known to be a powerful aphrodisiac and would be used by both men and women to stimulate estrogen and testosterone.

Today, Patchouli has many uses within the home. It can be placed in any room to create a strong air freshener and can also be used as a laundry detergent. Inspired by the silk traders, Patchouli continues to be used as a repellent for pests. Its anti-fungal properties make it a great substitute for harsh chemicals used in the garden and that may harm plants.

Patchouli is a natural tonic which stimulates both the body and mind and can support normal organ function. It is a great herb for those who may be suffering from depression as it can defuse feelings of anxiety, anger, stress and sadness. Patchouli is widely used in aromatherapy treatments because of its ability to relax tensions and stimulate pleasure hormones when being inhaled. It can also be helpful to women trying to conceive as it is known to boost fertility.
