Geological Information
Azurite and Malachite often grow together and are wonderful stones to have in a collection. Both Azurite and Malachite are soft copper carbonate minerals. More often Azurite it is found in massive form inter-grown with Malachite as a result of the weathering and oxidation of copper sulfide minerals.

Azurite is a soft stone named for its deep “azure blue” color. It is a copper carbonate mineral found in the upper oxidized portions of copper deposits.  Azurite is a secondary mineral formed by the action of carbonated water acting on copper-containing minerals.  It has a vitreous or glassy luster or sheen on a mineral surface. Over time, as it absorbs water, it changes into the mineral Malachite. Thus, the two are found together, creating a brilliant deep blue stone with flashes of green or vice versa.

Malachite was known in Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. and was prized by ancient Greeks and Romans for jewelry, ornaments and was even used in its powdered form for eyeshadow. It is very possible that the name Malachite was derived from either of the 2 Greek words “Malache” – meaning “mallow” referring to its color – or “Malakos” which means “soft” and can be a hint towards Malachite’s hardness. Most Malachite found on the market is cut from botryoidal masses with fibrous banding of lighter and darker shades of green.
