Fossil – ammonoid cephalopods, first appearing in the Devonian period (over 400 million years ago) and became extinct at the close of the Cretaceous period
Found: Nepal, China, India, US, Canada
Ammonites were cephalopods (predatory marine mollusks) similar to the modern Squid, Octopus and chambered Nautilus. The ammonites shell contained a spiraling progression of chambers divided by thin walls called septa. The animal only occupied the last and largest chamber. A thin living tube called a siphuncle passed through the septa, extending from the ammonites body into the empty shell chambers. The ammonite secreted gas into these shell chambers, enabling it to regulate the buoyancy of the shell. As the ammonite grew, it added newer and larger chambers toward the open end of the coil.
They died out along with the dinosaurs at the close of the Cretaceous period some 65 million years ago. Their existence on Earth lasted for 330 million years and their hard shells are found as fossils in most countries throughout the world. Noted by humankind since Biblical times, they were first called “Ammon’s Stones” due to their resemblance to the rams horns of Ammon, the ancient Egyptian God of life and procreation. They have been collected and prized for their aesthetic and geometrical beauty for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the late 1700’s that it was generally accepted that these “rocks” were the remains of once-living organisms.
Metaphysical & Spiritual Properties
Ammonite is a protective stone which gives stability and structure. It can eliminate caustic attributes and transform negativity into smooth, flowing energy. It provides for insight and helps to assist one in seeing the “whole picture.” Associated with the root chakra, it provides stability, encourages one’s survival instincts and is extremely grounding.
Those who wear the ammonite promote the flow of chi, or life force energy, through the body, which results in the stimulation of positive abundance in all forms. Everywhere it goes, it absorbs good energy, following a spiral motion from the peripheral to the center, and radiated back in a centrifugal direction to bring to its owner maximum wealth and health. Utilizing this same energetic flow, it has the ability to provide protection against harm, negative or evil energies, and other kinds of bad luck. Thinking of Ammonites as a filter, they draw off any negative or dense energies which are no longer needed, moving them through the spirals and releasing them as fresh, positive, loving life force energies.
The Ammonite is a very powerful earth healing fossil. Its spiral shape symbolizes continual change and evolution. Ammonites have absorbed cosmic energy over eons of time and help to stimulate the life force within, while also helping one to find and work with their life path energies – assisting one in finding the proper way down the coiled, spiral spiritual pathway to the Highest Self.
The Ammonite has an incredible Chakra representation; within the shell is a series of chambers with the siphuncle tube (which regulated the balance of water and gas in each section) connecting each of the chambers; the chakra system is actually quite similar. Energy flows in a spiral – the Ammonite shell is in the form of a spiral. Ammolites (the thin, iridescent layers of the ammonites shell) carry the full seven color spectrum of the chakra system, associated with each of the first seven chakras.
Ammonite shells resemble the subtle body, with its chambers and connective tube. The chakra system has three main currents: one along the spine and two that wrap around it. The major and minor chakras are located where they intersect. This suggests running energy through an ammonite could help regulate the subtle body, balancing and aligning the chakra system. A chakra that is too open or too closed is out of balance; running energy in a specific direction can help regulate a chakra. Placing them at the site of suspected blockages could be beneficial, helping to get that energy flowing once again.
~ They have been collected and prized for their aesthetic and geometrical beauty for thousands of years, tapping into the naturally occurring magic of sacred numerology and the Fibonacci sequence.
~ Believed to ease birthing pains and bring relaxation, as it helps remind one to keep breathing due to its circular design.
~ The “stones” radiate positive Earth Energy
~ Often available as a split pair, the make for creating and maintaining a potent connection when one half is gifted to a loved one, or kept in a sacred space or altar.
~ Said to grant deep meditative states as well as assist in drawing prophetic dreams.
~ In the Middle Ages, Ammolite was known as Draconites – due to their bright colors and what was considered a bizarre appearance, they were thought to be stones stolen from a dragon’s head.
~ Named for Ammon, the Egyptian god of Procreation & Life.
