Tiger’s eye is a member of the quartz family. Within this quartz matrix are asbestos fibers usually occurring in layers. It is the asbestos that makes Tiger’s Eye a chatoyant gemstone, meaning the fibers reflect in a wavering silky luster that can resemble the eye of a cat. The word Chatoyant comes from the French meaning “cat’s eye”.

In the Golden Tiger’s Eye, the inclusions of the mineral crocidolite oxidizes and forms the golden/brown color. In the Blue Tiger’s Eye, iron inclusions cause the color.
