Geological Information
Citrine, a member of the quartz family, is a silicon dioxide mineral with a trigonal crystal system. The yellow color of Citrine is caused by iron and can vary in shades from pale yellow to deep amber. Its name comes from the French word citron, meaning lemon. Most of the Citrine on the market today is heat treated amethyst – dark amber colored clusters are an example of this treatment. What is sold as a tumbled Citrine is heat treated – including our tumbled at the DG. The natural Citrine from Brazil is lighter yellow and there is beautiful deep yellow Citrine from Africa.

Because Citrine is quartz that has had iron introduced during its growing period, you will find beautiful combinations when other minerals also find their way into the growth structure, such as with powerful citrinated Smoky and Ametrine crystals.

As far back as 300 B.C., Citrine was used as a precious gem in Greece, and as a result of its color, is still sometimes mistakenly referred to as Golden Topaz.
