Born May 22, 1930, in Woodmere, New York Harvey, Bernard Milk was an American politician and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. His political career began in the '70s when he helped organize the Castro Village Association, an effective power base for gay merchants and a blueprint for other queer communities in the US. His career was tragically cut short on November 27, 1978, when he was assassinated by a disgruntled former city Supervisor who was later acquitted of murder charges and given a mild sentence for manslaughter, partly as a result of what became known as the “twinkie defense.” The assassin's attorney claimed that he'd eaten too much junk food on the day of the killings and thus could not be held accountable for his crimes.
