Black Opal is one of the many colorful opals known as ‘common opal’. Common opals lack the flashes of light that is produced in precious opals. This opal is commonly found in mass form and is popular to carve into a variety of palm stones and carvings. It forms from a mixture of opal, palygorskite, and chalcedony. Black Opal presents in a range of blacks and browns, from black to grey to beige to brown to white. It can be slightly translucent but is usually almost opaque. Opal is a hydrated silica mineral, which consists of spheres of silica bound to water meaning that these opals usually contain between 6-10% water trapped within its gemstone form. They formed millions of years ago when their liquid state flowed into cracks in the earth and solidified.
