Labradorite is a member of the plagioclase feldspar family with a triclinic crystal system. They display remarkable flashes of vivid iridescent colors of blues, greens, yellows, oranges, and reds, sometimes with a flash of purple. This play of light is due to the interference of light rays from the plate-like structure and has come to be known as labradorescence. Labradorite was discovered in Labrador, Canada by Moravian missionaries who named it after the location in 1770. In the 1940’s, a stone which displayed the entire color spectrum was found in Finland and was later identified as Labradorite. One theory is that the iridescent colors of Labradorite are actually extra-terrestrial energy that was trapped within the crystal millions of years ago while the earth was forming.
Metaphysical & Spiritual Properties
A sister to moonstone, Labradorite links to the Crone aspects of the Goddess, and grants inner knowing. It enhances intuition and psychic perception; just like the cord-cutting Crone, it helps the bearer to release judgment, and understand their destiny. Use it to bring Light to the shadowed realms of the self and to connect with the power of the waning Moon.

In ancient Lore, Labradorite is often associated with the Aurora Borealis. Native Inuit tribes of North America’s legends claim that Labradorite fell from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis; the fire of their ancestors. Similar lore speaks of an Inuit warrior who stumbled upon a cave embedded with the Aurora Borealis within its rock walls. The warrior struck the Aurora Borealis with his spear in attempt to release it from the rocks but he was unable to remove it all, leaving some of the light, which was forever imprisoned within the rocks. The native inhabitants then used the gemstone for medicinal purposes for the belief that it would increase their energy while reducing stress and anxieties.
Other lore considers Labradorite to be a talismanic gem of winter. Labradorite was known as a “phenomenal gem” in Oriental cultures. Phenomenal gems exhibit a moving line, star or changes upon the face of the stone which vary the light and are considered to bestow good fortune to the wearer – though they are only to be worn on Saturdays.

Originally used by Druids, divination with the ‘Crystal Ball’ is similar to meditation in the sense that when scrying, you must use your own inner vocabulary to trust any messages you may receive. The sphere as a shape is an ancient and universal symbol that represents unity, completeness and infinity – the whole universe. It symbolizes wholeness and radiates special energies that are created from the Earth. Unlike pyramids, eggs or other crystal shapes, the spheres do not have a focused energy but instead they emit energies in all directions, filling the entire space with its healing properties and cleansing the auric fields. It is extremely useful to use during meditation as it aids in perceiving the messages received. Place a Labradorite sphere in your bedroom, work desk or any space you believe needs that specific energy to bring Intuition and Destiny emanating in all directions of the space.
