Geological History
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride crystal which grows in cubic patterns and occurs in hydrothermal veins alongside other crystals such as Quartz, barite and Calcite. It can vary in color from green, blue, purple, white or pink.  Fluorite in its natural state is clear and the colors are produced by impurities. It will often appear in a wide range of colors in a single specimen – rainbow fluorite is gorgeous.  It is a very soft stone and will break between color layers when dropped.

The word fluorite comes from the Latin word “fluere” meaning flow. Fluorescence has derived its name from Fluorite – glowing colors under ultraviolet light. Synthetically grown Fluorite is used in creating lenses for microscopes, telescopes and even in some Canon cameras. The largest piece of fluorite ever discovered was found in Russia and measured approximately 2.12 meters long and weighed about 16 tons.

Earliest uses for Fluorite date back to Ancient Egyptian and Chinese cultures where it was used as an ornamental crystal and was a favorite among collectors.
