History & Folklore

The combination of jet and amber beads was worn by royalty and priests in ancient cultures. Jet was known as Black Amber, or Witch’s Amber, also believed to be incredibly protective and grounding. Both the Romans and Chinese believed that Jet is simply an even more ancient form of Amber. Today it is still prized by magic practitioners as a potent synergetic combination, representing the light and dark, yin and yang, bringing balance and deep earth connection.

Amber has been valued and used by humans for thousands of years, with evidence of its use dating back to the Neolithic period. In ancient times, Amber was believed to have powerful healing properties, and was used to treat a variety of ailments, including headaches, joint pain, and respiratory problems.

Geological Information

Under the right conditions resins polymerize and harden with age, turning into copal. After several million years copal matures into amber.

Amber is fossilized resin produced by ancient conifer and some deciduous trees. This resin is a sticky, aromatic substance that is produced as a defense against insects and other threats. When the resin was still in its sticky, liquid form, it could flow down the trunk of the tree and trap insects, spiders, and other small creatures that happened to be crawling on the bark. Over time, the resin hardened and fossilized, preserving these organisms in remarkable detail. The amberization process is estimated to take between 2 and 10 million years.
