Geological Information

Rhyolite is a volcanic rock composed of fine-grained minerals, including feldspar, quartz, and mica. The unique pattern on the surface of the rock is created by the presence of gas bubbles in the lava, which minerals fill the air space. The unique “bird’s eye” patterns of this particular stone are very different than the orbicular spheres of ocean jasper which are silicified, these patterns are instead spherulites. Rhyolite displaying this formation are only found in Mexico.
