History & Folklore

In the medieval era, it was used in cosmetics and in the making of mirrors. In more recent times, it has been used in alloys, pharmaceuticals, and electronic equipment. Bismuth is the main ingredient used in common over the counter stomachache remedies.

Geological Information

Bismuth is a chemical element with the symbol Bi and atomic number 83. It is considered to be an extremely stable element. It is a dense, silvery-white metal that is both brittle and malleable. Bismuth is unique in that it expands as it cools, which makes it useful in some applications, such as in cosmetics and fireworks. Bismuth specimens, like the ones you find at our shop, are lab grown as the mineral does not have the space in nature to expand into the amazing geometry shapes it forms. Bismuths rainbow color is a result of oxidation.

These crystals are shaped in unique ways because their outer layer experiences faster growth compared to the inner part, resulting in unfilled spaces within the larger crystals. Nevertheless, the growth of the crystal’s interior is still governed by its structure, leading to the formation of distinct “step” features.

Works Well With...

Bismuth is a stone of transformation and change that works well with other stones that promote personal growth, such as Moldavite, Labradorite or Amethyst.
