Chalcanthite is rare natural, water-soluble copper sulphate pentahydrate, that forms in oxidized copper sulfide deposits, such as those found in mines and caves. This mineral is easily grown synthetically from copper sulfate solutions. This can be done by dissolving a readily available chemical salt called copper sulfate, and then letting the water evaporate. The specimens we carry in our shop are lab grown. Because the color is a result of copper in the mineral’s composition, the color of the lab grown specimens are considered natural.
