Charoite is a rare and silicate mineral that belongs to the kupletskite group and forms in large masses and veins. It is a complex mineral containing potassium, sodium, calcium, barium, strontium, oxygen, silicon and hydrogen. Charoite is formed from the alteration of limestone by the process of contact metamorphism, where hot magma comes into contact with existing rocks, causing them to change chemically and structurally. It occurs primarily in dense fibrous aggregates. Charoite is found only in the Chara River in Russia and is known for its unique and mesmerizing swirls of lavender, purple and black hues.
