History & Folklore

Copper is said to be man’s oldest metal and can be dated back more than 10,000 years. The oldest known piece of Copper Ore found in northern Iraq can be dated back to about 8700 B.C. Some of the earliest workers found that Copper was able to be easily manipulated into different shapes. Because of its soft nature, Copper was useless as a weapon, but was still fashioned into useful tools such as razors, mirrors, coins, weights and balances by the ancient Egyptians. 4,000 years after it was discovered that Copper could be hammered into different shapes, metal workers learned that Copper Ore was also able to be melted down making it easier to form more advanced products. In more recent times, copper has continued to play an important role in many industries, including construction, electrical engineering, and telecommunications.

Geological Information

Copper is a chemical element with the symbol Cu and atomic number 29. Copper is a soft and malleable with a reddish-orange color, and is known for its excellent conductivity of both heat and electricity. Copper is commonly found in the Earth’s crust and is typically mined from large open pits or underground mines.  Though soft, it is very durable and resistant to corrosion.

Copper compounds give a blue or green hue to minerals such as azurite, malachite and turquoise.

Copper is an essential nutrient for many organisms and is involved in a number of vital biological processes. It is found in the bloodstreams of all humans and animals.
