History & Folklore

Archeology studies suggest that Hematite has been used for over 164,000 years, first being used by prehistoric humans during the Stone Age as chalk to adorn cave walls in what is now South Africa. It has also been found in graveyards from 80,000 years ago though it is not exactly known what their purpose was. Used by Ancient Egyptians to stop a wound from bleeding, it was also included as amulets in their tombs. It was referred to as the blood stone in the Middle Ages for the red tinge left behind in water after it was washed and polished as if the stone itself had bled. Native Americans used a powdered form Hematite as war paint for their warriors as it was believed to make them invincible.

Geological Information

Hematite is a mineral that belongs to the iron oxide group of minerals. Its chemical formula is Fe2O3. Hematite is commonly found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks, and it’s often used in industrial applications due to its high iron content. Hematite is a metallic gray or black in color, with a bright metallic luster. It’s often found in botryoidal or reniform (kidney-shaped) formations, and its crystals are typically tabular in shape. The name Hematite is derived from the Greek word ‘haimatites’ meaning blood. This is because when Hematite is found naturally the iron content causes it to rust giving it a deep red, blood-like color.
