Howlite is incredibly calming, helping to still the mind and deepen one’s focus during meditation. It is very beneficial to those who can’t seem to turn off their brain, especially to those suffering from insomnia due to overthinking. It instills patience, letting one settle into the calm and stillness of their mind and knowing all will happen in its right time. It helps absorbs anger away from you, both anger you are experiencing and the anger of others.

It is said to enhance intuition and spiritual awareness, making it an ideal stone for meditation and spiritual practice. Howlite is also believed to help facilitate communication and improve relationships by promoting empathy and understanding.

Because of this stone’s beautifully white opaque surface and grey veining, it is often dyed blue to resemble Turquoise, or red to resemble Red Coral.

History & Folklore

Howlite is named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist who first discovered the mineral in Nova Scotia in 1868. It has been used by Native American tribes for centuries, particularly for its calming and grounding properties. Howlite is also sometimes referred to as “white buffalo stone” due to a Native American legend in which a woman was visited by a white buffalo that transformed into a beautiful woman and gifted her with this stone.

Geological Information

Howlite is a borate mineral that occurs in evaporite deposits and is often found alongside gypsum and other minerals. It was first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1868, and is also found in the USA, Mexico, and Germany. Howlite is typically white or gray in color with gray or black veining.

Works Well With...

Howlite works well with other calming stones such as Amethyst, Lepidolite, and Blue Lace Agate. It can also be paired with other crown chakra stones such as Clear Quartz and Selenite to enhance its spiritual properties. Howlite is also believed to work well with Black Tourmaline and other grounding stones to help balance its energy.
