History & Folklore

Iolite was a stone of the Vikings and was used for navigation, as it was said to have the ability to point the way even in cloudy or stormy weather. The stone’s pleochroism made it possible to determine the angle of the sun, even when it was obscured by clouds or fog. This allowed sailors to navigate the open sea more accurately.

Geological Information

Iolite is a silicate mineral that is composed of magnesium, aluminum, and iron. It’s also known as the “water sapphire” due to its similarity in appearance to blue sapphire. The stone’s color varies from deep blue to violet-blue, with a unique optical property known as pleochroism. This means that the stone appears to change color depending on the angle at which it is viewed.
