History & Folklore

Jade has been a favor stone for carving all manner of things from axes to vessels since antiquity. In ancient China, where Jade was considered the “imperial gem,” it was a symbol of status and power and was often used to make objects of beauty and utility such as jewelry, tools, and weapons. The Mayans and Aztecs of Central America also valued Jade highly and used it for religious purposes, including often being placed in the mouths of the deceased to help guide their souls to the afterlife.

Geological Information

Jade, also known as Jadeite, is a sodium aluminum silicate with a monoclinic crystal systems. There are two forms of Jade: jadeite and nephrite, which have slightly different chemical compositions and colors. The colors of jade range from creamy white to black, with many shades of green in between.
