History & Folklore

Larimar was first discovered in the early 1900s, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that it was rediscovered and named by a Dominican Republic geologist. The name “larimar” is a combination of the name of his daughter, Larissa, and the Spanish word for sea, “mar,” because of the stone’s resemblance to the Caribbean Sea. Due to its association with the ocean and the island of Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), larimar is also sometimes known as “Atlantis stone” or “Dolphin stone.”

American mystic Edgar Cayce strongly believed in the existence of Atlantis and even predicted that a blue stone which possessed powerful healing energies would one day be found. Cayce’s vision turned prophetic when Larimar was discovered in the Dominican Republic, precisely where Cayce had foreseen.

Geological Information

Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, specifically in the province of Barahona. It is a volcanic stone that formed through hydrothermal activity. The blue color of larimar is attributed to the presence of copper and manganese, while the white streaks come from the calcium content. Larimar forms in the cavities and fractures of volcanic rock and is often found in association with other minerals like calcite and quartz.

Larimar is said to work well with other stones that have a calming or soothing energy, such as Blue Lace Agate and Lepidolite. It can also be combined with stones that aid in communication, such as Lapis Lazuli and Aquamarine, to enhance its effects.
