Peridot is a stone of compassion, bringing a sense of warmth, generosity, and forgiveness to the heart. It helps to reestablish self-worth and supports you in moving forward on your path of truth. Peridot vibes with abundance and prosperity, attracting wealth and opportunity into your life. It can enhance your ability to manifest their desires, particularly in the realm of finances and business. This stone can also be helpful for those who are seeking to connect with their inner truth and purpose, as it facilitates spiritual growth and self-awareness.
Ancient Egyptians called peridot the “gem of the sun” and believed it protected against evil spirits. They also used it in jewelry, including in the famous jewelry collection of Cleopatra which was once thought to be mostly emeralds. It has been consistently mistaken for emerald throughout history. In ancient Roman cultures, Peridot was referred to as “evening emerald” which refers to the shimmering effects Peridot shows in the dark and in artificial light such as candlelight. In medieval times, people believed the gems adorning the shrine of the Three Holy Kings to be emeralds but were later proven to be Peridot. In Hawaiian culture, Peridot is considered to be the tears of the goddess Pele. According to legend, Pele’s tears became Peridot when they fell to the earth and cooled in the form of gemstones.
Peridot, a form of olivine, is a mineral composed of magnesium iron silicate generally forming short, compact prisms. Peridot is created when magma or lava containing olivine cools and solidifies, or when olivine-rich rocks are subjected to intense heat and pressure like diamonds. It grows in earth’s mantle much deeper than most crystals which form within earth’s crust. It has a green color caused by iron, ranging from pale to bright green, and is one of the few gemstones that only comes in one color. It has a vitreous luster and is transparent to translucent.
Peridot works well with other heart-centered stones, such as Rose Quartz, Rhodonite, and Pink Tourmaline. It can also be paired with other abundance and prosperity stones, such as Citrine, Green Aventurine, and Pyrite.
