Pietersite is a chalcedony variation of quartz composed mainly of jasper. Pietersite is a fibrous mineral which is wavy unlike the gold tiger eye that normally has straight fibers. It is also sometimes known as Tempest Stone, due to its swirling bands of color. It is a relatively rare stone that is believed to have formed millions of years ago, during the Precambrian era, when the Earth’s crust was still being forged. Pietersite’s unique composition results in a range of colors, including blues, golds, browns, and reds, with the blue variety being the most well-known. The coloration is caused by the presence of crocidolite, an asbestos mineral that has been replaced by quartz over time. Pietersite can be translucent or opaque and has a silky, smooth texture.
