Geological Information

Scolecite is a hydrous calcium silicate mineral that is a member of the Zeolite family. Scolecite was first discovered in 1813 by the British mineralogist Henry James Brooke. Its name is derived from the Greek word “skolios”, which means “crooked”, referring to its habit of forming twisted or bent crystals. Scolecite forms in cavities in basaltic rocks, often associated with other zeolites such as heulandite, stilbite, and apophyllite. Its crystal structure is like that of stilbite, but scolecite has a higher symmetry and forms prismatic, needle-like crystals that can range in color from white to pale pink.
