Worry Dolls
Worry Dolls, also called “monaca quitapena“, have the ability to remove worries from sleeping children according to legend in Guatemala. Children tell one worry to each doll and then place the dolls under their pillow. By morning the dolls have gifted them with the wisdom and knowledge to eliminate their worries. A local legend about the origin of the Worry Dolls refers to a Mayan princess named Ixmucane. The princess received a special gift from the sun god which would allow her to solve any problem a human could worry about.
Meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans, the dolls are usually very small and measure only a few inches in height. Commonly made from materials like wood, wire, and small scraps of fabric . Vibrant colors and intricate patterns are often used when crafting the doll’s clothing.. Symbolic of a traditional Mayan therapeutic practice, it is believed that by expressing concerns or fears to the dolls, individuals can release their anxieties and find comfort. While commonly placed under a pillow or mattress before going to bed, the dolls can also be kept in pockets or bags during the day.
A Worry Doll charm is perfect gift as a token to a loved one.
