Geological Information

Goldstone is a man-made glass that consists of microscopic octahedral crystals of copper dispersed in glass, creating the glittering appearance. It is created by reducing, or removing oxygen, during the melting of soda-lime glass that contains copper salts. This causes the copper salts to decompose to a metallic copper.

It is also sometimes referred to as “Aventurine Glass”, giving the material an “aventurescent” appearance. There is some discrepancy as to its origin. Many believe it was accidentally discovered in the 17th century by Monks in Northern Italy by mistakenly dropping copper shaving into molten glass. Others attribute Goldstone to different Venetian glass makers- Briani in 13th century and Miotti in the 17th century.
