Geological History
Mother of Pearl is formed when an irritant is introduced into a mollusk shell. The byproduct of the animal’s protection mechanism sometimes yields an organic material called nacre, which is what we know as Mother of Pearl. Nacre is iridescent, whereas the normal protective porcellaneous lining of a mollusk’s shell is far more common.
