Geological Information
Orthoclase is part of the potassium feldspar mineral group. It is also called k-spar or k-feldspar.  Its monoclinic crystal structure is what sets it apart from other potassium feldspars. Orthoclase is one of the chemical components found in moonstone. This polymorphous stone forms primarily on granite and can range in color from gray and brown to orange, yellow, and pink.

Orthoclase is an otherworldly stone as high amounts of it have been found on the surface of Mars, as well as in lunar sand retrieved during the Apollo missions to the Moon. Here on Earth, it was originally discovered in 1801 by Rene Just Hauy. It was first named “orthose”, from the greek “orthos”, meaning straight, in reference to the fracture or cleavage of the stone. It’s name then changed again in 1823 and 1958 as scientist learned more about its unique chemical structure.
